Huntress CTF 2025 - Tabby's Date

Challenge Description

Ohhhh, Tab, Tab, Tab…. what has she done.

My friend Tabby just got a new laptop and she’s been using it to take notes. She says she puts her whole life on there!

She was so excited to finally have a date with a boy she liked, but she completely forgot the details of where and when. She told me she remembers writing it in a note… but she doesn’t think she saved it!!

She shared with us an export of her laptop files.

Thought process

I went to google and searched: “Recover not saved Notepad files”

I saw this

To recover an unsaved Notepad file, navigate to the hidden `%AppData%` folder in File Explorer by typing `%AppData%` into the search bar, and look for `.txt` files there or in `C:\\Users\\%USERNAME%\\AppData\\Local\\Notepad`. If you are using an application that offers a "Recover Unsaved Documents" feature, look for that option in the "File" menu.

Navigating

pwd
/Documents/tabbys/C/Users/Tabby/AppData/Local/Packages/Microsoft.WindowsNotepad_8wekyb3d8bbwe/LocalState/TabState

9bf7ca49-e491-4691-a21a-f3263bb695a2.bin

Wrote a simple script to hexdump it:

Solution(Bash)

#!/bin/bash

# Loop through all .bin files in the current directory
for file in *.bin; do
    # Check if there are any .bin files
    [ -e "$file" ] || { echo "No .bin files found."; exit 1; }

    echo "Processing $file..."

    # Create a new file with .txt extension containing the hex dump
    xxd "$file" > "${file%.bin}.txt"

    echo "Saved hexdump to ${file%.bin}.txt"
done

echo "Done!"

After I ‘cat’ all the files I notice between every two characters is a dot. So i grep for f.l.a.g and remove dots like this:

cat *.txt | grep f.l.a.g -A5 | tr -d '.'
